A Seasonal Guide: What to Expect From The Weather in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

A reliable weather forecast can make trip planning so much easier! It allows travelers to know what to pack and how to plan their trip. Costa Rica is a great place to visit year-round. Characterized by a dry season and a rainy season, Costa Rica has something to offer every single month of the year.

If you’re specifically considering Playa Tamarindo for your trip, you’ll find that the weather will never stand in your way to have fun and explore the surroundings.

Why You Should Familiarize Yourself with the Current Weather Conditions

Past seasonal data offers access to average weather information, facilitating the identification of discernible trends that are poised to affect your Tamarindo experience. Additionally, credible extended forecasts are at your disposal, providing precise insights into the anticipated weather conditions for the duration of your stay.

However, it doesn’t matter if you’re visiting during dry periods or the wet season. You should always have the essentials in your luggage.

A weather forecast can help you prepare for a number of things while on vacation:

  • High temperatures
  • Humidity
  • Intense sunlight (don’t forget your sunscreen!)
  • Wind, especially if you plan trekking and hiking experiences
  • Cold weather (not really applicable to Tamarindo, but something you should generally be prepared for when traveling)
  • Insects (tend to be most prolific when the humidity is high)

It’s easy to see that your choice of clothes, accessories, cosmetic, and personal care/protection supplies depend on the weather.

So, when should you get ready for a relaxing beach getaway in Tamarindo? When could you expect plenty of sunshine and when’s the peak tourist season?

Tamarindo’s Dry Season

December to May is a period known as the dry season in Tamarindo. While Costa Rica is incredibly lush and green, this season sees no rainfall at all.

In some sense, it’s comparable to winter in the northern hemisphere. Some plants die, some lose their foliage. Yellow and orange tones can be observed in the beautiful forests, giving them incredible colors.

The temperature during the dry season is at its highest. The peak occurs in February, with daily averages in the 80s and 90s.

Many travelers like visiting Tamarindo in December and January. That’s when the rainy season has just ended, daily sunshine is abundant, and everything is still lush from the prior monthly rainfall.

February and March, as already mentioned, are the hottest and driest months. Since you have the ocean and beautiful beaches, however, you’re not going to feel the heat.

April marks the end of the dry season. There is some chance of rain, but the hours of sunshine are still plentiful. The temperatures drop a bit, and the humidity will start to increase gradually.

If you’re going to visit Tamarindo during the dry season months, consider bringing the following essentials along:

  • Light clothes (linen pants, cotton shirts, dresses, skirts)
  • Bathing suits
  • Sandals and sneakers (if you intend to hike or trek)
  • Lightweight rain jacket (especially if you’re going to be visiting the rainforest)
  • Sunglasses, hat
  • Sunscreen

Rainy Season Months

While there’s a definite chance of rain during the wet season, there’s no reason to stay away from Tamarindo from May until November. Tamarindo is known as one of the driest places in Costa Rica. There will still be beautiful sunshine, as well as all of the greenery to enjoy.

In Tamarindo, the wet season is characterized by intervals of clouds followed by daily sunshine. Tamarindo Bay will see a couple of thunderstorms but they never last more than a couple of hours.

April and May will give you an occasional shower and still plenty of sunshine. From June until the end of August, you’ll enjoy temperatures in the range of the 80s and 90s. Humidity is higher, but rainfall typically lasts an hour or two per day.

September comes with a higher precipitation chance and is sometimes called the “official start” of the rainy season. Temperatures are in the 70s and 80s. However, most of the time, you’ll only spot afternoon clouds and not experience too much rain.

October and November will have fairly rainy day weather. The risk of weather fluctuations is most significant, which is why the cost of a Tamarindo trip tends to be the lowest during this period.

If you’re going to visit Tamarindo when the chance of rain is high, don’t forget to bring the following essentials:

  • A raincoat or a reliable rain jacket
  • A good pair of rain boots or hiking boots
  • Waterproof backpack
  • Quick dry travel towels
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Other kinds of weather-resistant clothing

When to Visit Tamarindo

There are objective factors that can help you determine the best time to visit Costa Rica. Still, your travel plans will depend on a number of other things – what you want to do for fun, and most probably your budget.

Tamarindo offers plenty of adventure opportunities year-round. The dry season is sunny and ideal for spending time at the beach. If you are keen on witnessing the rainforest in all of its splendor, travel during the wet season.

Many consider the best time for a Tamarindo visit to be from December to March. The weather is most settled and predictable. November is the coolest month of the year, but the weather is still warm enough for beach fun.

March is known as the driest month – you will get 31 days of sunshine and zero percent chance of rain. On the other hand, October is statistically the wettest month. Obviously, there are some exceptions and fluctuations from one year to another but you should still be prepared for precipitation.

The one thing you need to know is that beaches are accessible and usable year-round in Tamarindo. If there’s something else you intend to be doing during your trip (as you should be), plan according to the weather forecast, and choose the period that’s bound to give you the best conditions for whatever you’re interested in trying.
